A well-received Vancouver Italian restaurant has closed its doors without warning.

Bacaro, the Michelin Guide-recommended restaurant and wine bar inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim in Coal Harbour, served its last guests on Friday, March 13.

A Noms Magazine community member (E) tipped us off early last week about the upcoming closure, and the signs since then have confirmed it.

Its Google listing is also now tagged as permanently closed.

On Instagram, the restaurant’s final post was a photo captioned “Grazie mille!” with the message, “A thousand thanks for all the love over the years. Ciao, bella.”

The comments section quickly filled with regulars and industry members sharing memories.

One wine supplier wrote about missing the team and the many memorable wine dinners they shared with Italian producers.

Others called it “a beloved corner” of Coal Harbour’s dining scene.

Bacaro originally opened in June 2021 under the name Giovane Bacaro.

It was a Venetian-inspired concept serving cicchetti, house-made pastas, and Italian wines in an intimate space on the ground level of the Fairmont Pacific Rim.

The restaurant was operated by Kitchen Table Restaurants, the well-known Vancouver hospitality group behind other Italian spots like Ask for Luigi, Pizzeria Farina, Di Beppe, and Farina a Legna.

Over the years, Bacaro carved out a reputation as one of Coal Harbour’s go-to spots for a polished Italian dinner.

The wine program in particular drew a loyal following.

It earned a spot on the Michelin Guide as a recommended restaurant, for several years straight, putting it among a select group of recognized dining spots in the city.

No official reason for the closure has been shared.

There was no public announcement ahead of the final day, and the restaurant appears to have shut down quietly after nearly five years of service.

It is unclear whether Kitchen Table Restaurants has plans for the space or if the Fairmont Pacific Rim will bring in a new restaurant concept to fill the location.

Bacaro now joins the list of recently closed food spots in Vancouver like Jamjar Canteen UBC, Goldilocks Main, and Gringo.
