Japanese Matcha Dessert Cafe Quietly Closes Downtown Vancouver Location

The food scene in downtown Vancouver is always evolving, and 2024 has seen its fair share of changes.

The West End in particular has seen a lot of turnover this year.

One of the latest quiet closures?

Daigyo Cafe, the Toronto-based matcha dessert cafe that first arrived in the neighbourhood just over a year ago.

One of our community members (@yum_chah) recently noticed Daigyo’s lights off and gates down during regular hours, sparking curiosity.

After reaching out to co-owner Grace, Noms Magazine confirmed that the West End outpost is indeed closed for good.

Grace shared with Noms Magazine that the team is actively searching for a new location outside of downtown Vancouver and nearby Richmond, though no further details have been announced.

Daigyo Cafe first opened its doors in the West End in February 2023.

Grace wanted to open a Canadian version of the boutique cafes usually seen in Tokyo.

In 2022, the first Daigyo Cafe opened in Toronto and was popular for their high-quality matcha desserts and pressed shokupan sandos.

Their matcha is sourced straight from Shizuoka, a Japanese region renowned for producing some of the best matcha powders in the world.

Although Daigyo’s time in the West End has come to an end, fans can rest assured that the cafe is looking for a new home elsewhere in the city.
