Twenty-nine years is a long run for any restaurant, and this one hurts.
Seto Japanese Restaurant, the family-owned sushi spot on Alexandra Road in Richmond, has announced its permanent closure on March 5, 2026.
The restaurant shared the news in a heartfelt post on Instagram and a notice on its door, writing in English, Japanese, and Chinese.

“With much gratitude for our community, we are announcing that we have officially closed our restaurant,” the notice read.
“It has been an honour to serve you and share so many meals and memories together the past 29 years.”
Seto first opened its doors in 1997.

For nearly three decades, it was a quiet, consistent presence on the Richmond dining scene.
It was not flashy. It did not chase trends.
It was one of the few authentically Japanese-owned and operated restaurants in the city.
That distinction mattered to the regulars who valued traditional preparation and a dining experience rooted in Japanese hospitality.
And for many Richmond locals, it was a spot that they dined at since growing up.
“We will always remember and cherish the time we spent as part of this community,” the post continued.

Although no specific reason is mentioned in the closure announcement, we did spot a commercial listing for Seto’s unit a couple of months back.
The description of the listing specified that the owners were retiring.
So yes, this is NOT one of those closures where money seems to be the issue.

Several regular customers also know about this and have congratulated the owners on a happy retirement.
Seto now joins a growing list of Richmond food spots that have recently closed including My Coffee, Chef Hung Aberdeen, and Joyful Congee.
