While many longtime food spots have been disappearing, one is quietly making a comeback and it’s right where it all started.
Sake Maki, the family-run Japanese restaurant that’s been known for serving solid sushi combos and bento boxes since 2008, has reopened on Commercial Drive.
If the name sounds familiar, it’s because the no-frills eatery was a staple on the Drive for years before relocating to Fraser Street in 2023.

Now, just two years later, they’ve made a return to their old neighbourhood, taking over the former Hem377 spot and reopening in earlier this May.
Fans of the original location will feel right at home here.
The new unit offers a similar casual dine-in setup and a menu stacked with value-packed options.
You’ll find bento boxes starting at $14.95 with mix-and-match favourites like California rolls, pork gyoza, chicken or beef teriyaki on rice, and even salmon sashimi depending on your pick.
There’s also a killer lunch special: miso soup plus any two items for just $11.50 (until 3 PM).
On the sushi side, combos range from a kid’s set at $10.50 to the Deluxe Sushi Combo at $24.95 featuring premium picks like toro, hamachi, and hotate.
For those who crave a bit of spice, there’s a spicy combo with spicy salmon roll, dynamite roll, and spicy tuna sashimi.
The return of Sake Maki joins a wave of quiet reopenings and new arrivals to the Drive, signaling a bit of hopeful energy for the area’s evolving food scene.
