It is not every day that the Prime Minister shows up at one of Vancouver’s most iconic bakeries.
During his recent trip to British Columbia, Prime Minister Mark Carney made an unexpected but very welcome stop at New Town Bakery in Chinatown.
Carney has been in the province for the past few days to spotlight the federal government’s push on major nation building projects, including fast tracked infrastructure and resource initiatives across BC.
But between site visits and policy announcements, he took a moment to visit the family-run Chinatown staple that has been serving locals since 1980.
In a video shared on his Instagram, Prime Minister Mark Carney is seen standing inside the bakery accompanied by MP Kwan and MP Fry.
Both MPs can be seen making suggestions on what the Prime Minister should try while he shakes hands with several New Town staff members.
The clip shows Carney smiling at the pastry case before walking out with a large New Town Bakery bag in hand.
He does not reveal exactly what he ordered, but he does give a nod in the caption to the bakery’s legendary steamed buns, the siopao that generations of Vancouverites have sworn by.
New Town Bakery has built a decades-long reputation for its Chinese and Filipino baked goods, including BBQ pork and chicken deluxe buns, freshly steamed siomai, and its award winning apple tarts.
The visit also mirrors Carney’s previous trip to BC earlier this year where he stopped by Kozak Ukrainian Eatery in New Westminster, signaling a growing pattern of highlighting local family run food spots during his travels.
For a bakery that has been a fixture in Chinatown for over forty years, the moment was a welcome spotlight.
