Summer is always the peak season for openings in the food scene.
But as we move closer to the colder months, things get incredibly brutal with less openings and more closures.
September is the slow transition to that pattern, where the city saw 8 closures.
Here are all the spots that did unfortunately shut down last month.
1. Their There

The Kitsilano brunch cafe and mochi donut shop closed on September 13 after eight years on West 4th. The team announced it back in May, pointing to the end of its lease. Rotating mochi donuts sat beside a full sit-down brunch menu.
No relocation was announced.

2. Manzo Itamae Japanese Restaurant

The Capstan Way dining room set September 30 as its last day after 18 years in Richmond. Skewers, sashimi platters, robata, teppanyaki and tempura shared one wide menu built for family dinners and big groups.
The farewell post promised “a new chapter is coming soon,” without saying what it is.

3. Starbucks (four stores)

Starbucks closed three downtown Vancouver stores and one in Burnaby on September 26, part of about 250 closures across North America.
In a letter to employees, chief operating officer Mike Grams pointed to locations “where we don’t see a path to acceptable financial performance.” Staff were offered transfers wherever possible.

4. Caffè Artigiano Main Street

The homegrown coffee chain closed its cafe at Main Street and East 24th in early September, 11 years after opening there in 2015.
A note on the door offered 10 percent off “for the rest of our time together here.” The chain still lists eight Vancouver cafes.

5. Banh Mi Tres Bon

The Richmond location of the Vietnamese restaurant closed after 10 years, announced on September 8 in a farewell signed by owner Lan Do. She spent about five years developing its hand-rolled bánh mì bread.
The White Rock restaurant at 1459 Johnston Road is still open.
Address: 1840-4720 McClelland Road, Richmond
6. Sweet Memory

The Taiwanese dessert shop on Leslie Road, known for handmade tofu pudding plus savoury skewers and dumplings, announced it would close at the end of September as its lease ran out. It opened in 2019.
The Memory Dining Group says it is already looking for a new home.

7. Sweet7 Richmond

The global mango tea chain closed its only Richmond shop on September 30, about 19 months after soft opening in Union Square in March 2025. The menu leaned hard on mango, led by mango pomelo sago.
Its downtown Vancouver shop on Robson Street is still serving.

8. B&P Ice-Cream and Coffee

The walk-up ice cream window in Steveston Village set September 30 as its final day because the owner is retiring. It had been on Second Avenue since at least 2009.
The menu boards covered Canadian ice cream, Italian gelato, egg waffles and bubble tea, and commenters on the goodbye post wrote “my childhood.”
