If you frequent the Cambie and King Edward area, you might have noticed a new sign pop up next to Old Xian’s Food.
A Noms Mag community member recently tipped us off that a new spot called Buns & Dumpling has opened its doors.
We went to investigate (twice) during their soft open phase (early Dec), and the first thing you notice is the process.
This isn’t a “grab-and-go” spot where the food is sitting under a heat lamp.

Everything is made fresh to order, which means you should be prepared to wait 15 to 20 minutes for your food.
If you are rushing to catch the Canada Line nearby, this probably isn’t the pit stop for you.
The menu covers all the handmade staples you would expect, including xiao long bao, steamed buns, and pan-fried buns.

However, there is one item on the board that might catch your eye: the “Chocolate Lava Xiao Long Bao”.
While it reminds us of the famous dessert from Din Tai Fung, it isn’t quite on the same level and definitely missing the iconic sea salt cream foam.

That and the chocolate lava steamed bun were graciously filled with chocolate though.

Instead, the real winner here is the Pan Fried Pork Buns, which were juicy and plump.
It was the standout item during our visits and seems to be what the kitchen does best.

Just keep in mind that the space is tiny.
It is designed mainly for takeout, with just a standing table by the window and two picnic tables outside if you want to brave the weather.
Buns & Dumpling joins a wave of new food spots in the city, including Guffo Cafe Robson, TOUK, and Slo Coffee Granville.
