Spotted: A New Chinese Clay Pot Spot Is Opening in Richmond Soon

If you frequent Richmond’s Union Square Shopping Centre for your bubble tea or late-night eats, you have probably saw that empty corner unit for months.

It used to be the home of Pho 37’s original location before they moved, and for a long time, it sat quiet.

Since early Fall, signage for a new spot called Hey Yearn Restaurant has been up, but the blinds-over windows kept the concept a total mystery.

This week, we spotted the blinds were lifted, revealing a partly renovated interior featuring stylish new green booths with detailing.

A sign with business hours has also been posted on the front door, signaling that an opening is very, very soon.

So, what are they serving?

We managed to get a peek at the menu sitting on the tables, and it looks like they are specializing in Wuzhi Clay Pot (Wuzhi Shaguo).

If you aren’t familiar with this regional specialty, it is a beloved comfort food from Jiaozuo, Henan with over 30 years of history.

The dish is named after the Wuzhi County style of earthenware pottery used to cook it.

These clay pots are known for imparting a subtle earthy flavour and keeping the food piping hot and juicy until the very last bite.

The menu is split into two main sections: “With Soup” and “No Soup”.

  • With Soup: Comforting options like Fermented Bean Curd Pork, Beef Brisket, and Lotus Root Patty.
  • No Soup (Dry Pot style): More adventurous items like Duck Feet, Pork Intestines, and Bullfrog with enoki mushrooms.

Once the restaurant opens, we’ll let you know!

Hey Yearn joins a massive list of upcoming food spots in Richmond, including The Food Court, Breka Bakery Richmond Centre, and Marugame Udon Richmond Centre.
