Remember when we told you a new katsu spot was taking over the closed Sushi Toki near Metrotown?
Now we have a much better idea of what is coming.
Fortune Katsu is getting ready to open in the former Sushi Toki space across from Metrotown Station in Burnaby.
We first spotted the brand back in early March when a hiring sign went up outside the shuttered sushi restaurant.
At the time, all we had was the name and a hunch that it would be a katsu-focused concept.
Now, the full menu is posted in the window, branded signage is up, and an “Opening Soon” notice is on the door.
The old Sushi Toki sign is still hanging above, but the windows are covered in Fortune Katsu branding with photos of golden fried cutlets and bowls of rice.
The menu is entirely focused on Japanese katsu, and the options are more extensive than you might expect from a quick glance.
There are katsu set meals starting at $23, including pork loin katsu, pork tenderloin katsu, and tenderloin medallion katsu. The ebi fry set with five pieces of fried shrimp comes in at $26.
If you want a bit of everything, combo sets run from $25 to $26.50. The Deluxe Combo gets you mini pork loin, tenderloin medallions, and ebi fry all on one tray.
They also have Japanese curry sets with katsu curry rice starting at $23, and egg-braised rice bowl sets like the katsu toji don for the same price.
Every set comes with miso soup, Japanese pickles, and shredded cabbage. The best part is that refills on rice, miso soup, and cabbage are unlimited.
On the appetizer side, there is tako wasabi, mala asari spicy clams, seasoned crawfish salad, and wakame salad, all priced between $4 and $6.
There is no official opening date yet.
The sign on the door says they are “taking a little more time to prepare for the best experience,” which sounds like they are close but not rushing it.
Dedicated katsu restaurants are still relatively uncommon in Burnaby compared to the number of ramen and sushi spots.
If Fortune Katsu delivers on the menu, it could fill a real gap near Metrotown.
