New Japanese Futomaki Specialty Restaurant Opens In Vancouver

When it comes to sushi joints, there are hundreds of options in Vancouver.

Spots specifically for futomaki though – sushi’s larger and more packed brother – there are very few that specialize in it.

Well, now there’s a new one as Yume Dining soft opens and joins the scene.

Yearim Kim, the owner and business partner, told Noms Magazine that they “noticed that futomaki, highball, and sukiyaki were hard to come by in the city.”

So, she decided to bring these delicious dishes to locals, blending creativity with tradition to offer something fresh and exciting.

The menu at Yume is all about Japanese fusion.

Their signature futomaki rolls are the highlight, coming in more than 10 different options.

Unlike regular sushi (which they also have), which typically features smaller, bite-sized pieces, futomaki are larger and packed with a variety of fillings, making them a more substantial and flavourful experience.

At Yume, you have the option of salmon, tuna, beef, creamy mango and more.

They also have special futomakis that come in 10 pieces and in flavours like spicy salmon, meat-lover, crispy unagi and more.

According to Yearim, their Kitchen Specials are ones to keep an eye on.

One is the Donmahawk, which is a deep-fried premium pork tomahawk drizzled with a sweet sauce. With its rice and mashed potatoes, it is no doubt a filling and satisfying dish!

Another special is the Flower Sukiyaki, a heart-warming dish that combines beef and napa cabbage in a bowl of broth and pairs perfectly with their drinks.

The menu is rounded out with other items like Japanese pasta, aburi nigiri, and Japanese whiskey highballs.

Interior-wise, the 2160 sq. ft restaurant has been revamped from its previous Sunny Side Up/DeDutch days to a bamboo-themed oasis.

With 57 seats, the ambiance combines soft, warm lighting with traditional Japanese aesthetics and a contemporary twist.

Yearim shared that “every detail, from the decor to the lighting, is crafted to enhance your dining pleasure and create a memorable experience.”

So the next time you’re looking for something more than sushi and are in the Olympic Village neighbourhood, consider checking out this new food spot!
