A New “Home-Style” Korean Restaurant Just Quietly Opened on Powell Street

In a city obsessed with flashy openings and big restaurant groups, there is something deeply refreshing about a place that just wants to feed you.

Nabi House has opened on Powell Street, and unlike the chaotic food halls downtown, this spot is designed to feel like a quiet escape.

Taking over the heritage space previously occupied by Aleph and El Compa, Nabi House is the self-funded passion project of Chef Daniel Lee.

According to reporting by Scout Magazine, Nabi House is the first restaurant from Daniel Lee, who moved to Vancouver from Korea at four years old and grew up nearby, close enough that this neighbourhood still feels like the beginning of his story.

He spent years working in top-tier Vancouver kitchens (including the Wedgewood Hotel), but for his own place, he stripped everything back.

He is running a “one-person kitchen.”

There is no massive brigade of line cooks here.

Just the chef, the pass, and the dining room.

It’s a rare format in Vancouver that allows for a level of care you don’t get in bigger venues.

The restaurant fits perfectly into the historic Railtown block, joining neighbours like Niwa and Nero Tondo.

Heritage rules mean the space has not changed much, but the open kitchen keeps everything visible and welcoming, suited for a quiet solo meal or a longer dinner with someone you know well.

The name “Nabi” means Butterfly in Korean. But for Daniel, it represents that familiar, easy feeling you get when you reconnect with an old friend.

This intention shows up clearly on the menu, which focuses on everyday Korean dishes meant to nourish rather than impress.

For mains, it’s all about warmth here.

Like Perilla Chicken Soup finished with aromatic oil, or a classic Kimchi Stew with pork belly.

Matching the unpretentious vibe, the drink list is tight and casual, highlighting beer, soju, and rice wine.

Nabi House is currently operating with a shortened à la carte menu as the kitchen settles into its rhythm.

Hours are set for 4pm to 10pm, Wednesday through Sunday.

With this opening Nabi House now joins other new arrivals in Vancouver, including 93 Coffee, Kinton Ramen, and Guffo Cafe.
