No-Tipping Micro Roastery Takes Over Matchstick Coffee on Main Street

The former Matchstick Coffee space on Main Street has a new tenant, and it is not another chain.

Noct. Coffee, a micro specialty roastery that has been operating quietly behind the scenes, is soft opening at 4807 Main Street in Vancouver on April 11 and 12.

The shop is taking over the well-known Matchstick Coffee unit, which had been a staple in the neighbourhood for years.

Noct. started as a small-batch roasting operation focused on traceable, intentionally sourced coffee.

The team describes their approach as chasing the sweet spot between acidity and body, with options ranging from fruity and wild to smooth and comforting.

This will be a no-tipping cafe with a living wage model, which is still relatively uncommon in Vancouver’s coffee scene.

All of their coffee and tea is traceable back to the farms it came from.

Beyond the coffee, Noct. says they are developing a menu of complex signature drinks inspired by what you would find at a speakeasy bar, but all zero-proof.

The non-alcoholic cocktail-style drinks are still being finalized, and the team says they are excited to share the full launch menu soon.

The space itself is being designed as a “third space” for the neighbourhood, split into two distinct zones.

One is called “re·connect,” meant for conversation and community.

The signage reads: “We encourage you to use this space to reconnect with the world around you.”

The other is called “re·imagine,” set up for studying, working, and solo focus time.

That zone carries an Eleanor Roosevelt quote about believing in the beauty of your dreams.

Each zone has its own signage and vibe, and the idea is to let people choose the kind of experience they want when they walk in.

Soft opening hours on April 11 and 12 will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

After that, regular hours will shift to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The team behind Noct. calls their community “The Night Owls Club” and says the cafe has been a long time coming.

They first teased the concept about a year ago on Instagram, starting with limited drops of their specialty roasts while working toward a physical space.

The March announcement that they had secured the Main Street location drew an immediate wave of support from nearby businesses and coffee lovers.

Neighbouring shops like Nui Vancouver and Mitchie Matcha both commented welcoming them to the block.

The soft opening will not have the full menu or complete pastry lineup, but the team says they want to start introducing themselves to the community and showing what is to come.

For anyone who has been wondering what was going into that Matchstick space, now you know.
