The old Hon’s Wonton House space in Olympic Village is not sitting empty for long.

A Noms Magazine community member (yvrsnaps) spotted signage for Obanhmi up at 25 E 2nd Ave, the unit that Hon’s left behind when they permanently closed their last Vancouver location.

For anyone who missed it, the closure of Hon’s marked the end of a decades-long run in the city.

Now that same corner unit is getting a very different second life.

Obanhmi is a BC-based Vietnamese sandwich chain that has been expanding steadily across the Lower Mainland.

They already operate nine locations in cities like Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, Langley, and Coquitlam, plus several spots across Vancouver.

The Olympic Village outpost would be their tenth.

If you have not been, the concept is simple.

The menu centres around banh mi sandwiches built on warm, fresh bread with options like lemongrass chicken, grilled pork, and a deluxe cold cut with pork belly.

They also serve fresh rolls, iced Vietnamese coffee, avocado smoothies, and passion fruit lemonade.

There are vegetarian, vegan, and halal options as well, which is not something you see at every banh mi shop.

Prices are generally in the affordable range, which fits the grab-and-go lunch crowd that Olympic Village tends to attract.

Based on the signage visible at the location, the Olympic Village outpost appears to be listing hours of Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed on Sundays.

No official opening date has been confirmed yet, but the banners and menu posters are already in the windows.

That usually means things are close.

Obanhmi joins a growing list of upcoming food spots across Vancouver like Meros, Eggslut, and 88 Supermarket in Joyce.
