A Music-Inspired Cafe Is Taking Over the Old Matchstick Space in Yaletown

It did not take long for the old Matchstick space in Yaletown to find a new tenant.

A Noms Magazine community member (littlevenator) spotted signage on the door for a new concept called Octave Cafe.

The sign reads, “New coffee experience is coming to Yaletown,” and renovations appear to be underway inside.

Matchstick Coffee closed its Yaletown location on March 1 as part of the beloved chain’s decision to shut down all four of its Vancouver locations after 14 years.

The closure was one of the most talked-about coffee stories in the city this year.

Now, a new cafe is already preparing to move in.

According to their Instagram page, Octave Cafe describes itself as “a music-inspired local cafe located in Yaletown.”

The name comes from the musical concept of an octave, where notes exist in balance and work together.

“Octave was created with one main idea: to bring harmony into everyday life,” the page reads.

The owners say they come from a musical background and work as artists in Vancouver’s local music scene.

They want the cafe to highlight other creatives in the city while offering a cozy space for rest and connection.

On the coffee side, they seem serious about the craft.

Their intro post talks about measuring carefully, dialling in every day, following recipes with attention, and focusing on milk texture, extraction, and balance.

“Our goal is simple. Every cup should be consistent, clean, and balanced,” the post reads.

Beyond coffee, the cafe will also serve fresh food, though no specific menu details have been shared yet.

Their branding features a playful red cat mascot holding a cup of coffee, which gives off a fun, indie energy that fits the music and arts angle.

No opening date has been announced but they’re hoping to open in March.

Octave Cafe now joins other upcoming food spots in Vancouver like Ricardo’s Kandy Korner in Yaletown, Hiyori Coffee, and Aura.
