A steak sandwich for $13 in Gastown might sound too good to be true, but it is very much real.
Stackhouse Steak Sandwiches has just opened a second location in Gastown, taking over the space previously occupied by Brathurst.
If the name sounds familiar, we covered the original Stackhouse when it first opened on Davie Street last year.
The shop quickly built a following for its affordable, no-frills steak sandwiches made by Chef Eric Lee, who previously worked on Damso and Oiso Kimchi Cafe.
The Gastown location is now open and serving the same menu that put them on the map.
The signature Stackhouse Steak Sandwich is $13 and comes loaded with medium-rare flat iron beef, crispy onion, and chimichurri sauce.
The flat iron is slow-cooked at a low temperature for eight hours using a sous vide process, which is how they get the meat that tender at that price point.
There is also a Steak Tartare Open Sandwich with dijon, cornichons, capers, parsley, and red onion.
If you want something heartier, the French Dip Sandwich and comes with au jus, horseradish cream, swiss cheese, and onion chips.
They rotate a feature sandwich of the month as well, so there is always something new to try.
On the sides, you can add a Caesar salad, French onion soup, smashed potato, or potato chips with truffle aioli for.
For those not familiar with Chef Eric Lee’s background, he brings French culinary training to a focused comfort food menu.
Before Stackhouse, he was behind Damso and Oiso Kimchi Cafe.
The previous tenant, Brathurst, shut down its Gastown location earlier this year but has said it will be reopening elsewhere in the city.
In a city where a basic lunch can easily run you $20 or more, a $13 steak sandwich with sous vide flat iron is a tough deal to beat.
It is the kind of price point that makes you do a double take.
Stackhouse Sandwich Gastown now joins other recently opened food spots in Vancouver like Cafe Lokal and Mitchie Matcha.
