Thereโ€™s a new reason to visit Vancouverโ€™s West End, and it smells like flame-seared steak and golden frites!

Opening August 8, Handson Steak & Frites is a new steakhouse helmed by veteran chef & owner Kyle Lee.

Taking over the former Ma Dang Goul space, which served the neighbourhood for three decades, this fresh addition is bringing something a little different to the area.

And for Kyle, itโ€™s more than just another opening.

โ€œChoosing to open this steakhouse was personal,โ€ Kyle shared with Noms Magazine.

โ€œIt marks the start of a new chapter in my career where I let my culinary experience take the lead and finally set off on my own.โ€

Heโ€™s not new to the kitchen grind.

His career spans across continents and cuisines, from Michelin-starred kitchens in Europe and New York to executive roles at top Vancouver staples like Baobei and CinCin.

At Handson, the focus is tight and intentional: steak and frites, done right.

The beef is prime, sustainably raised, and seared to perfection.

โ€œWhile our signature dish is undoubtedly steak, my personal favorite is our beef tartare, which uses beef tallow melted through a scorching hot metal cone to infuse it with rich, smoky fat.โ€ said Kyle.

Each cut is paired with frites that are double-cooked and perfectly seasoned, crisp on the outside and tender inside.

Beyond the signature dish and beef tartare, the menu features other thoughtful plates that have been refined through what Kyle describes as โ€œcountless trials and honest tasting.โ€

The wine list has also been curated to complement the menu, offering pairing options from bold to subtle.

The restaurantโ€™s 16-table and 7-bar-seat layout is framed in deep green tones, warm wood, and aged brass.

The atmosphere is pushing moody but comfortable, refined but not stuffy.

At the center is the open kitchen, where the clatter of pans and crackle of fire become part of the dining experience.

โ€œThe vibe here aligns perfectly with the mission weโ€™re trying to deliverโ€”laid back, genuine, and full of character,โ€ said Kyle of the West End.

โ€œItโ€™s a neighbourhood that embraces individuality, and we felt it was missing exactly what we offer.โ€

Handson is opening during a time of visible transition for the area.

The addition of Handson adds something new to the mixโ€”a focused steakhouse with soul and style.

Handson will join a list of new food spots that recently opened in Vancouver like Noople, Keumsan, and Nook Coal Harbour.
