New Vancouver Fish & Chips Spot ‘Rumble Fish’ Opens in Hastings-Sunrise

There’s a new fish and chips joint in Vancouver, and this time in the heart of Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood!

Rumble Fish recently opened its first brick-and-mortar location in late June, taking over the corner unit that previously housed Red Wagon Cafe (before they moved a few doors down).

While the space is new to seafood, the story behind it is rooted in some familiar Vancouver kitchens.

Chef and restaurateur Tyson Reimer isn’t new to the scene.

You might recognize his name from past projects like Deacon’s Corner, Cobre, and Peckinpah – spots known more for meat than for seafood.

But after years behind the grill, Reimer stepped away from the red meat grind and city kitchens altogether, relocating to Squamish in search of something new.

That reset gave birth to Rumble Fish, which began as a modest food truck in 2023 focused on clean flavours, local seafood, and doing one thing really well.

And now, a year and a half later, the concept has planted its roots in East Van.

Inside, the space is cozy and unfussy, with black-and-white checkered floors, exposed wooden beams, and vintage movie posters (spot the Jaws one!) lining the warm wood-paneled walls.

A large, hand-painted fish mural by local artist Noemi Kozikowska, which brings life to the room.

Overall, the space is a little retro, a little rustic, and very much East Van.

We dropped in anonymously on a warm afternoon and ordered the one-piece fish and chips.

The fries were thick-cut, crispy, and well-seasoned, and the fish had just the right amount of batter – light, golden, and not overly greasy.

Served with tangy house-made tartar and a bit of slaw on the side, it felt simple but nicely dialed in.

The menu keeps things straightforward: cod or sockeye salmon done grilled or fried, served with fries, tartar, and slaw; grilled rockfish plated with black beans, rice, and chimichurri; and options like fish tacos, sandwiches, and salmon on a bun.

There’s nothing overly fussy or complicated about it – just clean, approachable seafood made with intention.

Rumble Fish now joins other recently opened Vancouver food spots like Halina, Bento Cafe, COFU Chinatown.

So if you’re craving fish and chips with a side of East Van charm, this one’s worth diving into.
