Richmond’s food courts are a beloved part of the local food scene.
Inside are gems that are often packed with uncles, aunties, and families who know where to find the city’s tastiest eats.
But like the rest of the food scene, these food courts have seen their fair share of change.
Pacific Plaza Food Court, once bustling with energy, has been notably quieter since Snack King Eatery and Car’s Dessert closed up shop.
But it looks like there’s new life brewing in this low-key food court.
Sonic Chef, the same stall from Richmond Night Market, has opened up in the former Snack King Eatery spot.
Sonic Chef is bringing its signature Changsha-style stinky tofu to the food court, with two options: the house special stinky tofu and the iconic black stinky tofu.
The latter being the staple of the Changsha region.
According to our research, the black variety gets its distinctive colour from a fermented brine, giving it an extra punch of that notorious (and beloved) funk.
In addition to stinky tofu, the menu also features hearty bowls of noodles, such as Beef Noodles in Soup, Lamb Noodles in Soup, and Chao Shan Style Beef Rice Noodles in Soup.
Luckily the noodles are very affordable, which are only $12.99.
These options add some much-needed variety to Pacific Plaza, which has missed the vibrant food court buzz it used to have.
With Sonic Chef’s arrival, there’s hope that Pacific Plaza Food Court will see a renewed surge of activity.
And if you’re on the lookout for more new food court eats, Empire Centre Food Court is also getting a bit of a glow-up, with two new stalls: Riceholic and Cha Don, a sister stall of Cha Kee, which is bringing Hong Kong-style breakfast to the area.
