Although the food scene has been shaky with many closures, there’s also been a pattern of many spots expanding throughout the province!

We recently spotted signage for Lao Cai Chinese Cuisine setting up shop at Cambie and No. 6 Road, taking over the former Cafรฉ & Grill unit.

Unlike most new spots popping up in the cityโ€™s busy core, this one is opening in a more industrial stretch of Richmond.

Lao Cai has an impressive backstory.

What began as a humble street stall selling Xiโ€™an liangpi (cold rice noodles) and roujiamo (stewed meat sandwiches) has grown into a restaurant brand with a reputation for authentic Shaanxi-style cooking.

Over 15 years of experience, it has expanded step by step, becoming a go-to name for hearty hand-pulled noodles, stuffed dumplings, and rich hot pot that diners say is unforgettable.

The brand first opened in West Vancouver in 2017 and launched a Surrey Central outpost earlier this spring.

Richmond now marks its third location.

From their existing shops, diners can likely expect a menu of skewered pork burgers, handmade dumplings, spicy chili oil creations, cumin lamb noodles, and rich stewed beef noodle soup.

Reviews often highlight the chewy handmade noodles and generously stuffed dumplings.

Judging from the signage, Richmondโ€™s Lao Cai will carry many of these same beloved dishes.

There has been no official announcement about the opening date yet, but Lao Cai will soon join the lineup of upcoming Richmond food spots like D Spot Dessert Cafรฉ, Baskin Robbins, and The Food Court.
