As food establishments are frequently shutting down due to economic challenges, lease increases, and pandemic recovery struggles, the latest to join the list is Nukid Cafe.
Located in Vancouver’s bustling West End, this Korean cafe specialized in globally-inspired baked goods.
The closure was initially brought to attention when a community member noticed that Nukid Cafe was listed as “temporarily closed” on Google and its Instagram profile had vanished.
Upon visiting the location on October 25th, we found the cafe plastered up and a farewell message on its front door.
The posted message read, “With a heavy heart, we announce the closure of Nukid Bakery + Cafe, our final day of operation will be October 22. We want to express our gratitude for your support and love all this time.
Your support has meant the world to us and we will always cherish the moments we shared together. Goodbye for now, and stay tuned for what’s to come here!
Thank you.”
Who was Nukid Bakery + Cafe?
Opened in January 2022, Nukid was a relatively new entrant to the food scene, located on Robson Street.
Along with its whimsical branding, it was particularly popular among friends looking to catch up over Korean-style donuts and an array of baked goods.
The cafe boasted a team of professional chefs and patissiers, many of whom had experience in well-known Korean bakeries.
Speculations on What’s Next
While the goodbye message suggests that the same team may be involved in a future project at the same location, this has not been confirmed.
Covering the storefront is a paper indicating that a Korean design company, Boas Construction, is part of the upcoming project.
Boas Construction has previously been involved in projects such as Mr. Sushi on Main, Steveston’s Toast the Coast, PoCo’s C Market Coffee HQ, and Sushi Mura.
Nukid Cafe’s abrupt closure marks another chapter in the challenging landscape for eateries in the current economic environment.
The farewell message leaves a glimmer of hope for something new, yet it remains to be seen what will take its place.
Given Boas Construction’s involvement, whatever comes next is likely to be another interesting addition to Vancouver’s dynamic culinary scene.
