It looks like one of Vancouverโ€™s most affordable Japanese grab-and-go spots is expanding again!

Maruhachi Ramenโ€™s sister brand, Onigiri Ya, is bringing its popular rice balls to downtown Vancouver this November.

Taking over the former short-lived shawarma shop outside the Central Public Library, the new location will mark Onigiri Yaโ€™s third outpost following their Broadway and Main Street expansions.

Just like the original shop, this downtown spot will focus on quick, grab-and-go service โ€” perfect for office workers and students hunting for an affordable and satisfying lunch.

The team told Noms Magazine that they plan to start with weekday hours before extending to weekends.

The menu features a wide range of onigiri, with prices starting around $1.99 and topping off at $4.99 for premium fillings.

Classics like tuna mayo, salmon, and teriyaki chicken sit alongside more unique creations such as pork kimchi, unagi cream cheese, and spicy chicken.

For a heartier meal, the shop also offers bento combos packed with karaage, tamago, and rice for just $6.

Onigiri Yaโ€™s continued growth reflects Vancouverโ€™s growing appetite for quick, high-quality Japanese comfort food โ€” all without breaking the bank.

Onigiri Ya Downtown now joins other upcoming Vancouver food spots like Cockney Kings Main Street, Dante Commercial Drive, and Krispy Kreme Broadway.
