But sadly that’s not the case as we have to share a bittersweet story.
Paul’s Sub Shop, a hidden gem in Burnaby for classic diner food and gigantic subs has announced its imminent closure.
From Humble Beginnings to a Community Icon
It all began with the original location on the corner of 45th and Fraser in Vancouver which opened up in 1971.
This was where Paul, the original owner, laid the foundation of what would become a beloved local spot.
Paul was more than a business owner; he was a man who genuinely loved his work. His commitment led to the opening of another location in Richmond while maintaining the Fraser Street spot.
Sometime in the 2010s, the shop moved to Imperial Street in Burnaby. Paul eventually passed, and a staff – Mama Desa – who had worked with Paul for years took over, embodying his commitment to quality and community.
The heart of the shop in its recent years has been Mama Desa, who runs the shop solo. Her enormous heart and passion for cooking have made the shop a warm (but direct), welcoming place, reminiscent of a visit to a beloved grandmother’s house.
A Menu That Captured Hearts
Paul’s Sub Shop wasn’t just about food; it was about creating memories.
From towering breakfast platters to the huge sub sandwiches, every item on the menu was a nod to Paul’s dedication to hearty, home-style cooking.
It wasn’t a budget spot, but the portions and old school feel had locals coming back for more.
An Emotional Goodbye
On their official Facebook page, an announcement of the closure shared on December 22nd brought a wave of nostalgia and sadness to the community.
The announcement mentioned Mama Desa’s retirement and gratitude for all the support the business has had all these years. In one of the replies, it also mentions that their lease will be up on December 31st.
This will now mark the end of an era for Paul’s Sub Shop and its iterations, a staple in Metro Vancouver since 1971.
Fans and customers expressed their sadness and support on Facebook. While the news is somber, many celebrated Mama Desa’s retirement and the legacy she and Paul have left behind.
Last Days to Savour the Magic
If you want to get your last Paul’s Sub fix, the shop will be open on the 27th and 28th.
It’s a final chance to relive the memories and flavours that have made the shop a cherished part of the community.
