Richmond’s food scene is undergoing major changes, and another spot has quietly closed its doors.
Hot Pot Palace, which has been listed as “temporarily closed” on Google since May 1st, is now permanently closed.
Despite their announcement of a closure for “system maintenance,” recent developments suggest a completely different story.
As of August 16th, we spotted the exterior signage being replaced, and their official website has gone dark—all signs pointing to a quiet changeover rather than a temporary hiatus.
Hot Pot Palace first opened back in 2017 and quickly gained a reputation for its upscale ambiance and quality hot pot offerings.
However, like many restaurants, it faced challenges after COVID-19, and things seemed to go downhill from there.
One significant incident that tainted its reputation was their controversial VIP card promotion in 2023.
Customers were offered a VIP card for $98 (down from $188), which promised a 22% discount on meals.
However, the deal fell flat when the restaurant abruptly shifted to an all-you-can-eat (AYCE) model.
Many customers who had purchased the VIP card felt scammed, as the card’s benefits became almost useless.
The discount didn’t apply to most menu items, and customers were left with minimal perks, like a small discount on a double soup base or unlimited black tea that tasted more like sweetened tea.
Adding to the decline were stories of poor service and allegations from a former employee claiming they hadn’t been paid for seven months.
By the time 2024 rolled around, Hot Pot Palace’s reputation had taken a significant hit.
As hot pot spots across Richmond began switching to AYCE concepts to stay competitive, Hot Pot Palace followed suit, but it seemed like it wasn’t enough to keep them afloat.
The good news?
The space won’t be sitting empty for long.
Richmond locals will be happy to hear that we spotted signage of Northern Style Chinese Restaurant taking over the unit.
Formerly located on Number 3 Road near Aberdeen Square, this beloved spot was known for its dumplings and has been missed by many.
When we shared the news, excitement buzzed across Chinese social media, with fans eager for the restaurant’s return.
According to the new owners of the restaurant, the previous chef is returning as well.
No other information is available yet about the opening date but we’ll let you know when we know!
