Retro Burger Spot Quietly Closes Richmond Outpost After Less Than a Year in Operation

It looks like another short-lived restaurant chapter in Richmond has come to an end.

50’s Burgers, the retro American diner-inspired eatery that opened in March 2024, has quietly shut its Steveston Village location.

The spot, which took over from Cocoru, had brought with it the same nostalgic energy from its original Burnaby outpost: checkerboard floors, Elvis-era vibes, and a menu stacked with burgers, milkshakes, pulled pork, hot dogs, and more.

But despite the charm, it didn’t work out and had a host of internal problems.

The restaurant was actually closed for a while now, some suggesting since January.

While there was no formal announcement from the business, local Redditors revealed some not so great things.

According to u/Stormy-stormtroopers, the closure was initially described as a “temporary shutdown” for repairs.

But as the weeks stretched into months and signage disappeared, it became clear the Steveston location wasn’t coming back.

Now, it appears the unit has been taken over by another local business called Village Curry, signaling that 50’s Burgers has fully exited the space.

And it’s not just customers who are talking.

Former staff members shared on Reddit detailed allegations about their time at 50’s Burgers.

One former server described a string of troubling incidents, including being asked to cover a $50 float shortage (which was later returned after confrontation), unpaid tip-outs, and final pay cheque being sent via e-transfer.

Another alleged that kitchen staff were not allowed to eat during shifts, and that some did not hold Food Safe certification, despite managing food during long hours.

There were also allegations of milkshakes being served with under-temp ice cream, lemonade made from bottled lemon juice and rose water, and frozen pies microwaved by servers themselves.

Of course, these are unverified claims and should be taken as such.

With its closure and no official word from the ownership, the Steveston outpost joins a long list of restaurant ventures in that specific unit that have come and gone.

For now, the Burnaby Edmonds location of 50’s Burgers remains open.
