When it comes to changes in the food scene, Richmond definitely is the most active.
And we’ve discovered another change in the city.
For months, we’ve been side-eyeing Kanae Yakiniku, the all-you-can-eat Japanese spot on the second floor of Central Square, right next to Aberdeen Centre.
They opened in 2020—arguably the worst time to launch a restaurant—but somehow made it work.
Their $58 per person AYCE deal had a solid lineup of choices like oysters, charcoal-grilled meats, BBQ, sushi rolls, fried bites, and more.
One of their more unique offerings?
A bubble tea beer collab with Truedan, the well-known bubble tea chain. A wild combo, but intriguing nonetheless.
However, every time we’ve swung by Richmond in the past half year, the restaurant’s lights have either been off during dinner hours or suspiciously dimmed during the day—for months.
Plus, their social media has been radio silent since September.
We had a feeling this was the end (since September).
Fast forward to February, and our suspicions are confirmed.
Kanae Yakiniku’s signage has been stripped off the building and we found renovations taking place.
In its place? A new banner teasing a new Sichuan-style fish pot restaurant.
According to our friend, it looks like it’ll specialize in a new Chongqing-style fish pot dish.
And just like that, Kanae Yakiniku quietly bows out after a four-year run.
