It looks like the team behind Richmondโs SYU Japanese Cuisine & Sushi Bar is heading across the bridge.
Thanks to a post spotted by a Noms Mag community member (yellywyw), we now know SYU is expanding to Kitsilano.
They are taking over the longtime home of Kibune Sushi, one of Vancouverโs oldest Japanese restaurants that recently shut down after more than 40 years.
SYU first opened in Richmondโs Oval Village back in February 2023, but their roots go even deeper.
Established in 2012, the team behind SYU has worked across multiple Asian countries and brought their expertise to Metro Vancouver with a modern-meets-traditional Japanese approach.
At the helm is Head Chef Hiroki Watanabe, a master with over 30 years of experience.
His creations often pay homage to tradition while adding a modern creative flair.
The Kitsilano location hasnโt officially opened yet, but SYUโs recent teaser post reveals that theyโve already completed renovations.
The new space appears to keep the spirit of Kibune alive, maintaining its iconic sushi bar and cozy booth seating, but with a fresh and minimalist update.
If the menu mirrors the Richmond outpost, diners can expect classic and contemporary sushi and sashimi platters, bento boxes, and small plates.
The items celebrate the Japanese culinary concept of โryลri,โ which balances seasonality, presentation, and flavour.
SYU Kitsilano now joins the list of exciting upcoming food spots in Vancouver, like Matcha Matcha, Pho 37 Commercial Drive, and Cha Tra Mue.
