It looks like more changes are happening on Richmond’s busiest dining strip, Alexandra Road.
Since early September, Kumo Sukiyaki’s second location has been oddly closed during prime dinner hours.
A temporary sign taped to the door explained it was “closed today” due to equipment maintenance.
But we know 80% of the time that often signals something bigger.
After more than two weeks of still being closed, we peeked through the windows and confirmed what we suspected – the restaurant is switching concepts.
Table mats inside now feature imagery of women in traditional Miao attire, surrounded by illustrations of Chinese dishes.
A large red sign with Chinese characters hangs at the front entrance, and framed photos of ethnic performances decorate the wall, pointing toward a new Yunnan Guizhou Oriental Cuisine restaurant preparing to move in.
Kumo Sukiyaki has not made any official announcement about the closure of this Alexandra Road outpost, which opened back in January 2025.
Their original Anderson Road location, which opened in early 2023, continues to operate as one of the few all-you-can-eat sukiyaki spots in the city.
The closure adds to a string of shake-ups on Alexandra Road.
Over the last two months, Chengdu Spicy Restaurant, HuDa Restaurant, and Cherry’s Food House have all disappeared.
Although we discovered that Cherry’s has actually quietly pivoted to a more Chinese-focused menu instead of shutting down completely.
Kumo’s Alexandra location opened less than a year ago, replacing Kazuhan Yakiniku, another restaurant that lasted only a year in the same space.
Its arrival was hyped as a sign that sukiyaki was gaining traction locally, but it now joins a growing list of short-lived ventures on the street.
While it is still unclear when the new Guizhou concept will officially open, the decor and branding suggest it is nearly ready to welcome diners.
Kumo Sukiyaki Alexandra now joins other recently closed Richmond food spots like White Spot RC, Milkcow Cafe, and A Bao Time.
