Richmond’s Affordable Rice Roll & Wonton Noodle Spot Quietly Closes After 2 Months

Well, it’s official.

Lucky J has reached the end of the road.

Just a couple of months after quietly opening with its affordable cheung fun and wonton noodles, the short-lived Chinese eatery at Union Square is now out.

And something entirely new is already taking its place.

We previously reported that Lucky J was already listed for sale in April after barely a month into operations, raising eyebrows about its future.

The 1,537 sq ft unit, formerly home to Hanppy Tofu House, had been offering house-made rice rolls for as little as $5 and wonton noodle soup for $7.50, making it one of the most budget-friendly newcomers to the plaza.

But even cheap eats weren’t enough to keep it afloat in Richmond’s notoriously high-turnover “Diabetes Plaza.”

Now, the mystery of what’s next has been solved.

On a recent walk through the plaza, we spotted new signage already up at the former Lucky J storefront, revealing that Huabaogang Roast Chicken, a Chinese roast chicken brand with roots dating back to 1956, will be opening its first Canadian location right here.

Yup, it looks like Union Square is about to get its own piece of Chinese culinary history.

Founded in China nearly 70 years ago, Huabaogang is known for its signature roast chicken, typically cooked with a blend of traditional Chinese herbs and spices for that iconic, savoury flavour.

Details about the menu or opening date haven’t been revealed yet, but judging by the branding, they’re setting up to make a bold debut in Richmond.

This switch-up marks just another chapter in Union Square’s ever-evolving food scene.

Alongside Huabaogang’s upcoming opening, the plaza is also expecting new arrivals like U Town Hot Pot, the return of Meet Fresh, and Molly Tea.
