Richmond’s Beloved Grocery Market Engulfed in Flames Shocking The Community

Richmond’s cherished local market, Super Grocer & Pharmacy, succumbed to a devastating fire last night January 26, 2024 in the heart of the Steveston neighbourhood.

According to reports by CTV News, the fire ignited in the rear section of the store around 5 p.m. and was met with an immediate response from Richmond Fire Rescue crews.

Despite their swift action, the intensity of the inferno posed significant structural hazards.

This prevented firefighters from entering the building due to the potential risk of a roof collapse.

The fire left the Steveston community in disbelief as Super Grocer had been a cornerstone of the neighbourhood since it opened in 1979.

It was not just a grocery store; it’s a legacy ran by the Lu family over multiple generations.

It was a regular spot for locals and visitors to purchase its vibrant selection of fresh produce, dairy products, and assortment of bouquets and potted plants.

Additionally, the convenience of an in-store Canada Post office, Pharmacy and a complimentary outdoor parkade added to its community-centric ethos.

As of Friday evening, the origins of the blaze remained a mystery.

No injuries were reported.

Fire investigators are diligently working to unravel the circumstances leading to the fire.

This incident adds to a series of fires that have plagued Metro Vancouver over the past year, with various food establishments in Kerrisdale, Commercial Drive, and Main Street having faced similar fates.

The community now watches with heavy hearts, hoping for recovery and the resurgence of their beloved Super Grocer, a symbol of local unity and resilience.
