New Southeast Asian Burger Joint ‘Street Hawker’ Is Coming To Mount Pleasant This Spring

Calling all burger enthusiasts!

Get ready for a culinary adventure as a new burger joint is set to open its doors in Mount Pleasant later this spring.

Street Hawker, the fast-casual, counter-service eatery is the brainchild of the team behind Cambie Village’s Potluck Hawker Eatery, and it’s ready to serve up some tasty Southeast Asian-inspired burgers, sandos, fries, and handspun milkshakes.

Located at the previous Planetary Burger unit (3088 Main Street), the two-level, 999-square-foot space will have 20 dine-in seats in the loft and eight on the patio.

We wanted to bring the energy of a traditional hawker stand to Main Street, but with a West Coast feel, where people can come in for a quick meal or take out, featuring delicious Southeast Asian-style handhelds and treats.

The decision to focus on burgers and sandos came from the existing popularity of these dishes at Potluck, which featured various sandos and burgers seasonally.

Street Hawker provides an opportunity to expand on that menu and get even more creative with their offerings. Cheung shares his excitement for one of the upcoming dishes, the Malay-O-Fish, featuring breaded fish, sambal, and coconut ranch.

The kitchen will be helmed by Chef Justin and Potluck Hawker Eatery’s long-time chef, Ernest Lee, who is now the culinary director of both locations.

While the menu is still in works, you can expect re-imagined takes on familiar and classic flavors that these chefs are known for. For instance: in burger or sando form, you may see chili crab, salted egg yolk, black pepper, and nasi lemak.

Of course, no burger and fries experience is complete without milkshakes. Street Hawker will offer both dairy and non-dairy shakes, featuring classic Southeast Asian flavours like ube, mango, and Milo, a popular malted chocolate drink. Yum!

Local designer Graeme Jack is responsible for Street Hawker’s branding, and he shares the vision behind the concept: “We capture the energy of a street-level adventure of a hawker market with a whole new perspective. An electric vibe, the sounds of people, the bustle of the cooking, the neon lights glowing in the dark– it’s all on the street, and your senses are in overdrive. These vibes are all present in a logo that’s reminiscent of a familiar 90s arcade game best known for fusing East with West.”

Street Hawker is expected to open up in late spring. We’ll keep you up to date when the official opening date is announced.
