A Burnaby Sushi Spot Has Quietly Shut Down After Just 3 Years

Another one didn’t make it.

Sushi Toki, the sushi spot in Burnaby, has shut down after roughly three years in business.

The restaurant first opened its doors back in 2023, joining a competitive stretch of Japanese dining options around Metrotown.

It was one of several sushi restaurants in the area competing for the lunch and dinner crowd, and for a while, it seemed to hold its own.

But a recent walk past the location told a different story.

The lights were off, the dining room was empty, and a sign posted outside the shop confirmed what the dark windows already suggested.

Sushi Toki is done.

In its place, a new brand called Fortune Katsu is preparing to move in.

The sign outside indicates the incoming concept is actively hiring staff, which suggests the transition is already well underway.

Based on the name alone, it sounds like Fortune Katsu will focus on katsu, the Japanese breaded and deep-fried cutlet that has been gaining serious traction across Metro Vancouver over the past couple of years.

Details on the new concept are still slim.

There is no confirmed opening date or menu preview that we could find at the time of writing.

The hiring sign suggests things are moving along, but it could still be a while before the doors officially open under the new name.

Restaurants that opened during or just after the pandemic have faced an uphill battle with rising rents, inflation on ingredients, and shifting dining habits.

Sushi Toki now joins other recently closed Burnaby food spots like MACU Tea, Nare, and Dinesty.
