End of an Era: UBC Coffee Shop Shuts Down After 18 Years

If you’re a UBC grad, there’s a good chance you’ve either grabbed a cup of coffee or strolled past The Boulevard Coffee Roasting Co. at least once.

For nearly two decades, this coffee shop was a staple.

But now, after 18 years of serving students, faculty, and the community, The Boulevard Coffee Roasting Co. has quietly closed its doors for good.

A community member (@hungry.dai_lo) recently spotted the closure sign posted on the shop’s front door, revealing that the coffee shop had ceased operations as of July 31st.

This closure marks the end of an era for many who saw Boulevard as their go-to spot for a calm study session or a quick caffeine fix before the day’s lectures.

Founded by John Chen, a former Ph.D. student in UBC’s Experimental Medicine program, Boulevard Coffee was more than just a place to grab a drink.

John’s commitment to community and sustainability was woven into the fabric of the business.

Not only did he serve as a leader within the UBC community, but he also contributed globally, receiving several humanitarian service awards for his work.

Boulevard’s dedication to environmental sustainability was another cornerstone of its mission.

Through a partnership with the UBC Compost Project, the coffee shop diverted over 10,000 pounds of coffee grounds from local landfills to sustainable composting each year.

For many, Boulevard Coffee was a cozy refuge amidst the hustle and bustle of campus life.

Its calm atmosphere, complete with wall outlets for all your study needs, made it a beloved spot long before the newer, fancier buildings started popping up around campus.

But all good things must come to an end.

According to a report by UBC Campus Nutrition, a new café bakery will be taking Boulevard’s place, though it’s yet to be announced whether it’ll be an independent shop or part of a chain.

For now, students returning for the Fall semester will have one less classic coffee shop to visit, though there are still plenty of options around campus.

And with Big Way Hot Pot opening soon, the UBC food scene is certainly still thriving.

Don’t forget to share this with your UBC friends who might want to reminisce about their favourite campus coffee spot!
