As much as we want to enter 2025 with positivity, the poor economy continues to wreak havoc on food businesses.
On January 7th, a longtime Kitsilano staple announced its upcoming closure on Instagram.
Aphroditeโs Organic Cafรฉ, the sister cafรฉ to Aphroditeโs Pie Shop, will close its doors on Sunday, February 2nd, after more than 20 years of service.
This cafรฉ has been a go-to destination for locals craving hearty, organic, farm-to-table breakfasts and brunches.
The reason for this unfortunate news is clear: rising costs.
In their announcement post, they stated that “after many years of being a beloved destination in Kitsilano, the rising costs of doing business has simply become too much for us to continue.”
Founded by Allan, who grew up on a traditional Saskatchewan farm, Aphroditeโs was born from his deep-rooted passion for sustainable food.
After years in the corporate world, Allan returned to his agricultural roots and, inspired by a cooking moment with his mother, decided to open a pie shop in early 2003.
The success of Aphroditeโs Organic Delights quickly led to the introduction of the cafรฉ later that yearโboth focused on farm-fresh ingredients and community spirit.
Allan’s dedication continued to flourish, and even after his passing in 2008, his daughter Peggy has kept his vision alive.
Under her leadership, the Aphroditeโs community has thrived, emphasizing local and organic food and supporting local artists and charities.
Although the cafe is set to close in February, the announcement post shares that the pie shop across the street will remain open and expand its offering.
If youโve enjoyed the comforting meals over the years or have yet to experience its charm, nowโs the time to drop by and soak in the atmosphere one last time.
