Vancouver Brunch Spot With Controversial Past Closes After Just 3 Months

In a surprising turn of events, Lucille’s, the cozy brunch spot that opened on South Granville just three months ago, has officially closed its doors.

Lucille’s had taken over the space previously occupied by Heirloom, a once-popular vegetarian restaurant that shut down in January 2024 due to financial difficulties and controversy.

Lucille’s opened in June 2024 and aimed to continue Heirloom’s tradition of quality brunch fare in the neighbourhood, with the same ownership team behind both ventures.

However, the closure announcement posted on September 4th on Lucille’s Instagram took people by surprise.

No clear reason was given for the sudden shutdown.

While Lucille’s didn’t specify the cause, the closure follows the rocky history of Heirloom, which faced backlash after adding meat options to its previously vegetarian-only menu.

The controversy alienated many of its loyal plant-based diners, and the restaurant’s social media response—calling its critics “vegan Nazis”—didn’t quite help its image.

Lucille’s seemed to be a fresh start for owner Gus Greer, who had promised a return to the dining scene after Heirloom’s fall.

But we suppose things just didn’t pan out.

The 2,405 square foot unit is now up for sale, listed at $199,000, signaling the end of another chapter.

This is another change in the South Granville neighbourhood, which has recently seen Nero Waffle Bar and Sushi Umi open in the area.
