After decades of being scattered across the city, a Chinatown legacy is finally returning to where it all began.
We just spotted signs for Golden going up at the old Daisy Garden spot, right beside New Town Bakery in the heart of Chinatown.
Although we weren’t familiar with the name Golden, we noticed the BKH (Bee Kim Heng) Jerky logo on the signage.
We reached out to Scott from BKH Jerky and he told us what’s happening here.
And if the name Bee Kim Heng rings a bell, this one’s going to hit you right in the nostalgic taste buds.
Back in 1986, Bee Kim Heng (which translates to Beautiful Golden Smell) was founded in Chinatown by a grandfather and his seven kids.
The original spot was in Golden Gate Centre and quickly became a jerky-slinging, noodle-boiling staple of the community.
Eventually, the business split into two branches—Bee Kim Heng (BKH) Jerky and Kim Heng Noodle—each run by different family members but both carrying that OG family flavour.
The jerky side set up shop at Fraser Street, while the noodles held it down at Keefer and Gore.
Now, 38 years later, the next-gen of the family is doing what every millennial dreams of: getting the band back together.
Scott, the current owner of BKH Jerky (and grandson of the founder), is bringing both sides of the culinary legacy back to their roots under one roof – right here in Chinatown.
The new spot, simply called Golden, will feature Bee Kim Heng’s legendary freshly grilled jerky front and center, with a Malaysian-Singaporean fusion restaurant in the back.
Scott shared with Noms Magazine that the plan is to open Golden on April 1st.
