Longtime Vancouver Chinese Bakery Closes After 14+ Years Of Operation – You Won’t Believe What’s Taking Over.

Last month, the city lost another longtime family-run food spot.

Marui Bakery, a cherished family-owned Chinese bakery in Vancouver, has closed its doors after over 14 years of operation.

On December 19, 2023, the bakery opened its doors for the last time before the owner retired.

Nestled in a plaza along Kingsway, behind Sumo Grill (formerly Honolulu Cafe) and near London Drugs, Marui was a quaint, hidden gem.

It was most known for its flaky HK-style egg tarts and an array of freshly baked Asian pastries and cakes.

This small but beloved bakery had become a staple for locals and those seeking traditional Chinese baked goods made fresh daily.

Not long after Marui Bakery’s departure, we spotted coming soon signs of the new owners of the space.

In Vancouver, it seems like there’s a fried chicken spot on every block now, so it’s not surprising that a chicken joint is taking over.

These signs were announcing the arrival of Prinkle Chicken, a growing name in the Korean Fried Chicken (KFC) scene.

Like all the other KFC brands, Prinkle Chicken offers a variety of flavours.

From the classic original to the sweet and spicy yangyeom, the Prinkle Snow, and the padak padak.

This new Kingsway location marks Prinkle Chicken’s sixth outpost in Metro Vancouver.
