If you’ve been following the hot pot trend in Metro Vancouver, you know it’s been sizzling for a while now.
But with so many hot pot spots now, the competition is fierce and some are starting to get edged out.
YuShang Hot Pot, a beloved fixture on West Broadway, is the latest to announce its closure, sending shockwaves through the city’s hot pot fans.
On August 10th, YuShang took to Instagram and Chinese social media to break the news that they’ll be closing their doors for good on August 31st.
This announcement marks the end of an era for a spot that has been serving up hot pot experiences since 2018.
YuShang wasn’t just about great food—it was about immersing yourself in Chinese culture.
The decor, rich with traditional Chinese elements, made every visit feel like a mini getaway to the heart of China.
YuShang offered individual hotpots, letting everyone choose their own soup base that they fancied.
And one thing that was regularly recognized was their presentation!
With eye-catching features like their unique meatball staircase, a meter-long platter of lamb, and wagyu displayed on a scroll.
But even a spot as special as YuShang couldn’t escape the challenges.
The competition in the hot pot realm has become fierce, with many restaurants pivoting to all-you-can-eat models to survive.
Yet, YuShang’s biggest challenge may have been its location.
The ongoing Broadway Skytrain construction has been a thorn in the side of many local businesses, with delays that seem never-ending.
Last month, we shared the unfortunate news of Simit Bakery’s closure due to the same issue.
Although the hot pot restaurant didn’t state why they were closing, it’s easy to see the hardship all Broadway businesses have felt.
In their closure announcement, YuShang encouraged their customers to visit one last time before the final hot pot is served on August 31st.
They also left off saying to keep up with their social media platforms, which may give a glimmer of hope that they’ll be back.
