The wave of restaurant closures in Vancouver isn’t slowing down, and another well-loved spot has quietly disappeared.
Since mid-December, Gastronomy in Gastown has been marked as “temporarily closed” on its Google Business listing and website.
But from what we’ve uncovered, it looks like Gastronomy won’t be making a comeback.
Gastronomy made its debut in January 2023, bringing a modern Italian-influenced menu with contemporary twists on classic dishes.
It quickly gained recognition, even landing the #3 spot on Georgia Straight’s Golden Plates Awards for Best New Restaurant in 2023.
Known for its firewood pizzas and stylish ambiance, it racked up an impressive 4.8-star rating on Google, with diners raving about the food and atmosphere.
But signs of trouble started showing last November when the restaurant was listed for sale.
(we did not contact the restaurant until January, nor did we mention about the listing)
Nothing seemed to come of it at the time, but fast forward to early January, and we spotted something telling—the interior was packed with racks of plates and equipment, as if it was prepping for a move or renovation.
After weeks of silence, we finally got a response from Jean Laven, part of Gastronomy’s bar and management team, on January 28th.
When asked whether the restaurant is permanently closed or would reopen elsewhere, Laven told Noms Magazine, “The restaurant will be closed until the landlord finds a new tenant.”
While not explicitly stated, it strongly suggests Gastronomy is gone for good.
This is yet another closure hitting the city’s food scene, reinforcing just how tough it is for restaurants to survive right now.
With rising costs, high rent, and a struggling economy, even award-winning spots with rave reviews aren’t immune.
For those who never got to try Gastronomy’s pizzas, it looks like the window has officially closed. And for those who loved it—this one stings.
