A beloved burger shop in West Point Grey has closed its doors for good after nearly a decade in the neighbourhood.

Rice Burger on Sasamat Street in Vancouver permanently shut down on February 18.

The closure was announced on Instagram by the owner, who wrote “after 9 amazing years of selling the good people our delicious Rice Burger we are unfortunately selling and will no longer be a restaurant.”

He added that “it has been a wild ride and have cherished all of the dedicated customers that have kept us in business all these years.”

A follow-up post on the final day read “that’s a wrap” and thanked the “Rice Burg nation” for coming by for one last meal.

Rice Burger was founded by childhood friends Jackson and Austin, who launched the concept as a delivery service in November 2016.

The pair started the business with just $1,000 and the equipment they bought from Walmart.

After gaining a following through deliveries, they opened their first brick-and-mortar location on Sasamat Street in September 2017.

The shop was known for its Japanese-style rice burgers, which replace the traditional bread bun with two hand-pressed circles of rice.

All sauces and marinades were made from scratch, and the menu featured items like Chicken Katsu, Korean Spicy Pork, Spam Musubi, and Prawn Tempura.

Rice Burger now joins other recently closed food spots in Vancouver like Hey! I Am Yogost Kerrisdale, Hundy, and MACU Tea Robson.
