Joyce Street Just Lost Its Longtime Bubble Tea Shop After 20 Years

Another longtime Vancouver food spot has closed its doors, and this one hits especially hard for the Joyce Street community.

Sunflower Bubble Tea, the small family-run shop near Joyce-Collingwood Station, has shut down after more than 20 years in the neighbourhood.

The spot was operated by a husband-and-wife team who have now retired.

Dana from the Sunflower team shared the news directly with Noms Mag, confirming the closure happened in late March.

If you grew up around Joyce or went to school nearby, chances are you have been to Sunflower at least once.

It was the kind of place that did not try to be flashy.

You went for the crispy chicken nuggets, the braised pork rice, and the taro bubble tea, and it delivered every time.

The menu leaned into Taiwanese comfort food, the kind of affordable, filling options that made it a go-to for students and nearby residents on a budget.

Beyond the snacks and drinks, Sunflower served as a gathering spot for locals, students, and families in the area.

It was a familiar face on a street that has changed a lot over the past two decades.

For more than 20 years, the couple behind the counter watched the Joyce-Collingwood neighbourhood grow and shift around them.

Through all of it, Sunflower stayed the same.

The team says the space will not stay empty.

A new Korean restaurant concept is planned for the location, with the goal of continuing to serve the Joyce Street community in a different way.

It is a bittersweet transition.

Sunflower is not the only longtime spot to close recently as owners choose to step back.

Seto, the Japanese restaurant that had been a fixture in Richmond for years, closed as its owners retired.

Taiko Yummy Food, another community favourite, is shutting down at the end of the month for similar reasons.

The French Table also closed its doors after the owners decided to move on.

There is a growing pattern of longtime operators deciding it is time to hang it up, and the neighbourhood spots they built are disappearing with them.

These are not closures driven by rent hikes or redevelopment.

It is a different kind of loss, and in some ways, a harder one to process because there is nobody to blame.
