It looks like another longtime Vancouver spot has come to an end.
While on the hunt for a comforting bowl of pho this week, we thought of heading back to Mr. Red Cafe, only to find its Google listing tagged as permanently closed.

There was no farewell post on Instagram or Facebook, and the only recent updates on social media have been for their sister spot, Hanoi Old Quarters, which reopened last year.
This West Broadway outpost was the last remaining Mr. Red Cafe after their Hastings Sunrise location shut down in 2024.
Founded by Chef Hong Duong and Rose Nguyen, Mr. Red Cafe first opened on East Hastings in 2014 before expanding to Broadway in 2016.
Their dedication to Northern Vietnamese cooking quickly earned them local awards and a loyal following.
Pho Ga, Pho Bo, and other family recipes became staples for many Vancouverites craving authentic Hanoi-style cuisine.
We remember going to the West Broadway location 3 times a week for lunch in 2016, as we worked nearby.
In 2019, the team launched Hanoi Old Quarters on Victoria Drive, though it abruptly closed in 2023.
That brand has since returned to Broadway with a revamped design featuring lanterns, modern finishes, and a menu blending tradition with inventive touches like Vietnamese crepes, oxtail pho, and signature cocktails.
As for Mr. Red Cafe, the Broadway location had a brief stint as a vegetarian concept following renovations in late 2024.
Though Google reviews say meat dishes quietly made their way back onto the menu soon after.
By summer 2025, the restaurant had quietly disappeared entirely.
A new Northern Vietnamese restaurant called Pho Viet Lotus has already taken over the space, with a fresh look and new ownership.
Based on reviews, it seems the Mr. Red Cafe closure likely happened in June or July.
With their website now offline, this may be the quiet end of Mr. Red Cafeโs story that first started in 2014.
Fans can still find comfort at Hanoi Old Quarters several blocks away, but for many, Mr. Red will be remembered as one of the cityโs most beloved Vietnamese institutions.
