Vancouver’s Bao Bei Celebrates 15 Years With a Tasty Throwback Menu

One of Vancouver’s most iconic restaurants is hitting a major milestone this spring.

Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie, the Chinatown spot known for its modern Chinese small plates and killer cocktails, is celebrating 15 years in the city.

And they’re marking the occasion by bringing back some of the dishes that started it all.

Starting May 1, 2025, the team is throwing it back to their opening days with three OG menu items: the Shan Tofu, Steamed Spring Salmon, and Crispy Pork Belly.

Each one has that signature Bao Bei twist, like chickpea tofu, Pixian douban glaze, and triple-cooked potatoes.

Alongside the throwbacks, Chef Joël Watanabe is also rolling out rotating specials, including upgraded versions of fan-faves like sticky rice cakes and fried rice.

And yes, those famous homemade dumplings, made by original dumpling legend Helen, aren’t going anywhere.

Drinks-wise, the Chino Margarita and Pina Colada are making a return too.

“It’s incredible to think it’s been 15 years since we first opened Bao Bei,” says owner Tannis Ling, who also co-owns Kissa Tanto and cocktail bar Meo with Watanabe and Alain Chow. “In 2010, our main vision was to try to provide a loud, fun and unpretentious environment while dishing out delicious plates of reimagined Chinese small plates”.

The celebration doesn’t stop there.

On June 22, 2025, the original opening sous chef Jesse Grasso (now repping Montreal’s Pichai) returns for a one-night-only pop-up.

He’ll be collaborating with Watanabe on a menu blending Chinese and Thai flavours in that uniquely Bao Bei way.

Tickets will be released soon, and let’s be honest…they’ll probably go fast.

Since opening in 2010, Bao Bei has racked up a ton of love: from being named #1 Best New Restaurant by Vancouver Magazine in its debut year, to making it onto the Michelin Guide’s recommended list.

So while Chinatown continues to change, Bao Bei remains a cozy constant.

And if you stop by, don’t forget to say hi to Charles, the longtime server who’s been a part of the restaurant’s story since day one.
