Vancouver’s Kingsway stretch before Metrotown may not get as much attention as the bustling Metrotown area, but locals know it’s home to some unique and beloved food spots.
However, one standout has now closed its doors: Minus Boutique, the dessert shop that previously went viral for its shortcake orb perched on top of bubble tea.
It officially shut down its retail location on September 8th.
Founded in 2020 by Pastry Chef Sweki Chen, Minus Boutique became known for its signature Minus Cup™, a creation that blends French-inspired desserts with refreshing beverages for both dine-in and on-the-go enjoyment.
The strawberry milk with yogurt cap, paired with their creamy Japanese strawberry shortcake, was one of their top sellers.
Sweki Chen, a pastry professional with over eight years of experience, brought a wealth of global pastry knowledge to Minus Boutique.
After moving to Canada in 2009, she was inspired by the rich diversity of flavours in the country. She had stints at esteemed spots like Thierry’s, West, and Coast by the Glowbal Group.
Minus Boutique not only offered their signature Minus Cups, but also crafted specialty cakes for weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations, such as a child’s 100-day event.
While the Kingsway location is no more, Minus Boutique isn’t gone for good.
The shop has transitioned to a commissary kitchen, allowing them to continue offering their specialty cakes for events and celebrations.
Across the street, Peachy Peachy – a bubble tea spot that opened in 2022 – has also quietly shut down.
It has been replaced by a new Japanese Korean shop called Yuki.
