Unfortunately we’ve got some sad news to share for seafood lovers.

Fish Cafe, a beloved seafood spot in Kerrisdale for over 25 years, will now be indefinitely closed after suffering devastating damage from a fire last September.

Before, there was some hope that the damage wasn’t too severe.

But that’s now not the case.

Back on September 29th, the Vancouver Fire Department arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke billowing from the front door and ceiling of Fish Cafe.

Thankfully, no one was inside at the time.

According to the Assistant Fire Chief’s report shared by CityNews, the fire is believed to have started in the kitchen.

This tragic event adds to the recent challenges for the Kerrisdale food scene, following a larger fire the previous year that gutted beloved establishments like Nando’s, Deer Island Bakery, and Pho Tan Vietnamese Restaurant.

Since the fire, Fish Cafe has remained temporarily shuttered.

Last week, owner Marcus Stiller shared an update with Noms Magainze, describing the restaurant’s state as suffering “devastating irreparable damage,” accompanied by horrifying images of charred walls, crumbled ceilings, and a kitchen reduced to rubble.

While Marcus refrained from commenting on whether Fish Cafe might reopen at a new location, he expressed heartfelt gratitude and sorrow.

“Yep, it’s a sad day for us as well,” he shared. “I’m really going to miss all our customers, a lot.”

Fish Cafe wasn’t just a restaurant—it was a cornerstone of the Kerrisdale community for the last 25 years.

Known for its fish and chips, seafood platters, and calamari, the cafe’s menu was a local favourite, offering blackened or grilled fish served with fries or rice.

It was a spot that brought neighbours together over comforting, no-frills seafood.

The fire’s impact extended beyond Fish Cafe.

Nakamura, the Japanese restaurant next door, also sustained damage, though to a lesser degree.

They remain temporarily closed as repairs are underway.

While Fish Cafe’s future remains uncertain, its absence is deeply felt by the community it served for over two decades.

Here’s to hoping this isn’t goodbye forever, but rather, a chance for new beginnings.
