Vancouver’s Largest Indian Buffet Restaurant Quietly Closes After 23 Years

Another one bites the dust.

It’s becoming a bit of a recurring theme in Vancouver: another month, another food spot lost to the redevelopment wrecking ball.

This time, it’s New India Buffet on West Broadway that’s shuttered its doors.

We noticed the restaurant completely boarded up while cruising around the city, and if you try to search it online, you’ll hit a dead end.

Their Google listing is marked “temporarily closed” (classic limbo status), and their official website?

Poof – gone.

But if you do some digging, things get clearer.

Turns out (according to Storeys), the building’s rezoning application for a 12-storey hotel was approved way back in July 2022.

So yes, that means this closure has been on the horizon for a while now.

The future hotel is set to bring 151 rooms, a new ground-floor restaurant, and is parked right across from the upcoming Oak-VGH Station on the Broadway Subway Project.

New India Buffet opened back in 2004 and was one of Vancouver’s largest Indian buffets, with over 70 items available to choose from. It had ample seating and regularly had sports playing on their TVs.

Their last Instagram post was on February 7th, but from Google reviews, it looks like the restaurant quietly closed sometime in March.

It joins the growing list of spots being pushed out by redevelopment, like Mello’s Arbutus location and Paragon Tea Room on Cambie.
