It looks like a familiar name is making a comeback!
One of our community members (@yetseat) spotted Hanoi Old Quarters, a beloved spot for Northern Vietnamese cuisine, is gearing up for its return but in Kitsilano’s Greektown area (West Broadway).
Originally opened in 2019 on Victoria Drive as a sister restaurant to the popular Mr. Red Cafe, Hanoi Old Quarters brought the same cozy ambiance and rich Vietnamese flavours that fans of Mr. Red Cafe had come to love.
But it wasn’t just a carbon copy of its sibling.
The restaurant carved out its own identity with unique offerings like the Egg Coffee, a rare and delightful find in Vancouver at the time, alongside its rustic wooden etched menu that added a distinct charm.
However, in November 2023, the restaurant quietly shut its doors without any announcement or goodbye party.
It was replaced by an Indian restaurant, leaving many regulars surprised and disappointed as they were unable to go for one final meal.
Now, nearly a year later, Hanoi Old Quarters is making its comeback, this time taking over the Kitstaya Sushi corner unit.
Kitstaya was a longstanding Kitsilano sushi joint that had been serving Japanese cuisine for over 15 years.
They too made no announcement of their closure.
But this is exciting news for those who frequent Greektown or who are craving some authentic Northern Vietnamese bites.
Although a Mr. Red Cafe is located just a couple of blocks away at Macdonald and Broadway, the return of Hanoi Old Quarters is great news for the neighbourhood.
The reopening will offer locals and visitors another fantastic option for Vietnamese cuisine in an area that is slowly going through a lot of changes.
While no official opening date or menu details have been released yet, we’ll keep you updated as soon as more information is available.
