A cheesesteak shop with one of the more storied histories in Vancouver’s food scene has closed its doors at Metrotown after a decade.

American Cheesesteak Co has permanently shut down its location inside Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby, ending a 10-year run at the mall.

The closure was first announced on March 25th in an Instagram post from the shop’s Metrotown account.

“After an incredible 10 years at Metrotown, American Cheesesteak Company will be saying goodbye at the end of March 2026,” the team wrote.

“From our very first sandwich to thousands served over the years, we are beyond grateful for all the love and support from this amazing community.”

A Noms Mag community member recently spotted the shuttered storefront at the mall, confirming the closure.

The brand has roots that go deeper than most sandwich shops.

American Cheesesteak Co was co-founded in 2011 by Anthony Sedlak, a Vancouver chef who became a national name after winning Food Network’s Superstar Chef Challenge in 2006.

Sedlak went on to host four seasons of the series The Main on Food Network Canada and wrote a best-selling cookbook before launching the cheesesteak concept as a gourmet take on the classic Philly cheesesteak.

Tragically, Sedlak passed away in 2012 at the age of 29, but his co-owners kept the brand alive in his memory.

The original location in downtown Vancouver eventually closed in 2019, leaving the Metrotown outpost as the last remaining shop.

Now that one is gone too, though the team says this is not the end of the road.

“Saying goodbye is never easy, but this is not the end,” they wrote. “We’ll be relocating and can’t wait to welcome you again soon.”

When a commenter asked where the new location would be, the account replied, “We will find somewhere that suits us,” suggesting a new spot has not been locked down yet.

American Cheesesteak Co now joins a growing list of recently closed food spots in Burnaby, including Saboten at the Amazing Brentwood, Green Basil Thai, and Arisu on North Road.
