Canadian Tea Chain Was Spotted Returning to Burnaby’s Metrotown After 6 Years

A Canadian tea chain that left Burnaby in 2020 is coming back, with signage up at Metropolis at Metrotown promising a fall opening.

DAVIDsTEA’s signage is up near the food court, beside Hula Poke.

It reads “steeping HERE soon” and “come say hi fall 2026,” with a QR code for anyone who wants to “join our tea-m!”

The unit was Sugar Burst, an imported candy and ice cream shop that opened in May and has already closed.

DAVIDsTEA says Burnaby is one of two stores it plans to open this fall, along with Southgate Centre in Edmonton.

Those two would take it to 25 company-owned stores across Canada, up from 23 now.

Six years ago, the company was going the other way.

In the summer of 2020, under creditor protection, DAVIDsTEA said none of its three Burnaby stores would reopen: Lougheed, Brentwood and Metropolis at Metrotown.

It cut its Canadian network to 18 stores, closed all 42 of its U.S. stores, and kept Vancouver’s Pacific Centre as its only B.C. location at the time.

The way back has been one mall at a time.

This year it returned to Oshawa Centre in June and opened at Square One in Mississauga in August, a mall it had left six years earlier.

At Square One, the store carries its loose leaf teas, pre-packaged teas, accessories and seasonal collections, plus a Tea Bar.

The chain hasn’t said yet whether Metrotown gets a Tea Bar too.

There’s no exact opening date beyond fall 2026, and the mall’s directory lists it only as coming soon.

DAVIDsTEA joins other upcoming openings like Kinton Ramen at City of Lougheed and Cotti Coffee at Metrotown in Burnaby, and Trusty Congee King in Richmond.
