Burnaby’s Affordable Korean Chinese Restaurant Quietly Closes

Looks like Burnaby just lost another late-night spot.

SOJU, the Korean-Chinese fusion spot tucked beside Oyama Japanese along Kingsway, has quietly shut its doors.

During a recent walk-by, we noticed the entire entrance wrapped up and after asking the renovation crew outside, they confirmed the restaurant is officially closed.

Apparently it is making way for a new Malaysian restaurant.

SOJU opened back in May 2023, taking over the former Sweet Bean dessert cafe space.

It built a rep for its affordable $5.99 Jajangmyeon deal, and an $8.99 daily lunch special that made it a go-to for budget-friendly eats near Metrotown.

And yeah, considering it was literally named Soju, the place leaned heavily into the drinking scene: open late, with bottles of soju galore and anju (aka Korean drinking snacks) on deck.

Earlier this year, the spot was listed for sale, pointing to some behind-the-scenes change brewing.

The final post on their Instagram dates back to March and recent Google reviews suggest Soju likely shuttered sometime in early April.

There’s no name yet on the new Malaysian restaurant taking over, but this change adds to the growing list of transformations in the Metrotown area.

Other changes like upcoming arrival of H Mart in Royal Oak and Meat Up, For Rest Cafe’s recent opening, and the farewells of Mama’s Rich.
