Cashierless shopping just got real in Vancouver.

Aisle 24, the Toronto-based unmanned convenience store brand, officially opened its first Vancouver location on May 9th.

They’re bringing its 24/7 cashier-free shopping experience to the West End’s Landmark on Robson development.

We first spotted signs of Aisle 24’s expansion last fall, but now it’s here and fully operational.

So, how does it exactly work?

Customers download the Aisle 24 mobile app, register an account, and use it to unlock the door.

Once inside, it’s a grab-and-go experience.

Simply scan your items at the self-checkout kiosk, pay, and you’re out.

Think of it as a more modern, compact version of 7-Eleven… but without the interaction with cashiers or long lines.

Inside, you’ll find a selection of non-perishables, personal care items, frozen meals, snacks, fresh baked goods, and deli products.

The store is restocked three times a week to keep things nice and fresh.

If this all sounds vaguely familiar, it might be because UBC recently launched Gage Market, another unmanned store on campus.

But here’s the key difference:

  • Gage Market uses Amazon’s Just Walk Out tech with overhead cameras and shelf sensors.
  • Aisle 24, on the other hand, uses good ol’ barcode scanning at a self-checkout kiosk, more like a mini supermarket than a tech showroom.

Security skeptics online often joke that cashierless stores could never survive in North America.

Well, Aisle 24 is putting that theory to the test. No staff, no security guard, just trust and technology.

Considering that the brand has multiple locations throughout the country already, the tech seems to be working just fine.

And it’s not stopping there.

Four more Aisle 24 locations are planned for Metro Vancouver, including Burnaby, Coquitlam, Richmond, and Surrey.

Aisle 24 Market now joins other recently opened food spots in Downtwon Vancouver: Grand Joy Hot Pot, Chocolat Favoris, Neate’s Donuts, and Golden Smell Mee.
